シドニーに拠点を置くエルケ・クレイマーは、イラストレーター、アートディレクター、ジュエリーデザイナーと多くの場面で活躍している。Based in Sydney, Australia, Elke Kramer is an illustrator, art director and jewellery designer.彼女はユニークで独特な美的センスを持ち、アートとファッションの雑誌「ライラックメナス」を創刊。そのアートディレクションも手掛け、たくさんのアーティストとコラボレーションしている。また、「ラッシュ 」、「イェン」、「ナイロン」、「デイズド・アンド・コンフューズド・ジャパン」のウェブサイト・アートディレクター、ファッションイラストレーターとしての活躍も有名だ。
自己紹介と最近の活動について教えてください。
私は全ての素晴らしきものに対してひたむきに愛情を注いでいます。ジュエリーデザイナー、イラストレーター、アートディレクターであり、実験的にですがパンを製造しています。
私は小さなデザインとジュエリーのスタジオを運営しています。ジュエリーやシルクのスカーフ、ベルト、バッグ、財布などのアクセサリーをプロデュースし、販売しています。ちょうど自身の2009年度サマーコレクション「TROMPE LOEIL」が完成したところです。また私とジェシー・ヒルとコラボレーションしたコレクション「ARTIFICIAL VS REAL」もあります。私はオーストラリアにあるチェーン店「スポーツガール」のために小さなコレクションもやりました。その商品は２月にお店に入荷予定です。2009年サマーコレクションのヨーロッパ出品は未定ですがその間、2009年度秋冬コレクション「MIRACLES & WONDER」を夢中になって進めています。2009年３月にオーストラリアのお店に入荷予定です。次のサマーコレクション「THINK TWICE」（仮タイトル） のデザインをし始めていると同時に、作業を進めるためインドネシアに数日向かいます。その他にもまた友人のケイト・ハーストと小規模なジンとブログを始めようとしていて、「マーサ・スチュワート」のような食べ物とライフスタイル（レシピ、ガーデニング、インテリア等）にスポットを当てたものです。
シドニーについて教えてください。ご自身や仕事をする上でその街で暮らすことについてどう思いますか？
私はシドニーの有名な交差点、テイラースクエアがあるサリーに住んでいます。中心部は汚く、変質者、深夜に徘徊する人、同性愛者のクラブなどがありますが、流行のカフェ、噴水もあります。サリーは非常にクリエイティブなムードを持っています。なぜならたくさんのアーティスト、デザイナーが住んでいて、エネルギーが満ちあふれてますからね。そこには良いコミュニティと集団の精神があり、私を奮い立たせ、刺激的な場所です。
シドニーで好きな場所を教えてください。
私の大好きな場所は「アンドリュー・ボーイ・チャールトン・プール」です。植物園の近くで、オーストラリア国立美術館とシドニーハーバーの近くにあります。プールは美しい自然植物に囲まれ、波止場や海上のヨット、戦艦がプールから見えて、とても素晴らしい眺めです。私は朝、スタジオに向かう前にプールで泳ぎ、精神を集中させています。

2004年に自身の名を冠したジュエリーラインをスタート。「バーニーズ・コープ」を含む、30以上のブティックで彼女のアクセサリーを買う事が出来る。彼女が使用する材料は非常にユニークで、さらに予想外の試みで製造されている。彼女のジュエリーは非常にアーティスティックで、ファッショントレンドに捕われていないものが多い。

Please tell us about yourself and your recent activity.
I am a dedicated lover of all things wondrous, self employed jewellery designer, illustrator, art-director and experimental baker.
I run a small design and jewellery studio where I design, produce and wholesale jewellery and other accessories including silk scarves, belts, bags and purses
I have just finished delivering my summer collections: TROMPE LOEIL by Elke Kramer, and the collaborative collection ARTIFICIAL VS REAL by Elke for Jessie Hill. I have also done a capsule collection for the Australian chain store SPORTSGIRL, due in store in February. My European Summer 09 deliveries are pending and I am frantically tying up the production for my new AW 09 collection MIRACLES & WONDER, due in Australian stores in March 09. At the same time I am also beginning to excitedly design my next summer collection – tentatively called THINK TWICE – I head to Indonesia in a few days to begin development.
I also collaborate with other fashion designers designing custom yardages and placement prints. I do freelance other design work, like branding, website art-direction and magazine illustration.
As well as (all) this I am just about to launch small zine & blog with my friend Kate Hurst, it will be a left of centre approach to food & lifestyle – recipes, gardening, interiors etc – a bit like Martha Stewart on acid.
Please tell us about your city, and how about living in your city for yourself/activity.
I live in Sydney, Australia. My home is in Surry, smack bang on a famous intersection called Taylor Square – its our epicentre of filth, degenerates, late night antics, gay day clubs, trendy cafes, tight black jeans and ice-junkies… plus there’s a fountain.
Surry hills has an amazing creative atmosphere, lots of artists and designers live here because the energy is so high. There is a good community and collective spirit, a zeitgeist that I find inspiring and exciting.
Please tell us a favourite place in the city you live and work in.
My favourite place is the Andrew Boy Charlton pool, situated near the botanic gardens, beside the National Gallery of Australia and Sydney Harbour. The pool is surrounded by beautiful native plants and have amazing views of the wharves afloat with yachts and enormous grey battle ships. It’s a soul cleansing experience to spend my mornings swimming there before heading to my studio to work.

In 2004, she launched her eponymous jewellery line to great success, entering over 30 of the world’s best boutiques, including Barney’s CO-OP in the US. Using unique materials whilst experimenting with unexpected production techniques, Elke’s jewellery is more of a realisation of artistic expression, rather than a following of fashion’s trends.
